And then there's Jo's eccentric mum Pearl (Margo Lee) with her strange dress sense, which will turn out handy, providing Jackie with a tutu for her final big gig. There's mad uncle Reg (Max Cullen), always wandering around with a sulphur-crested cockatoo on his shoulder, a motif which will turn into a handy marketing ploy for Jackie, Angus and The Wombats. Meanwhile, we meet up with the oldies who live in the pub with Jackie and Angus, and who are suitably eccentric. Jackie walks a high wire between two buildings down Circular Quay way, and when she falls, she cashes in on the fifteen minutes of fame it generates - the target is a TV music program, WOW, similar to the real ABC pop show Countdown, run by gay Terry (John O'May, in a nod to Countdown host Molly Meldrum).Īfter Jackie makes it to the police station and the evening news, Terry himself bails her out. Next, aware of the potency of sexual symbolism from his reading of adult books, Angus gets Jackie to do a stunt wearing fake nude plastic breasts. Jackie hooks up with a band called The Wombats and they're a hit with the crowd, while band leader Robbie (Ned Lander) is a bit of a hit with Jackie and they share a Bondi beach moment. If you start out wanting a Jag, you'll end up with a Jag.'įirst up Angus gets Jackie to crash a gig at the Lizard Lounge at the Bondi pavilion where The Swingers, fronted by Phil Judd, are playing. He has a simple philosophy: 'Start out wanting a Volkswagen and you'll end up with the Volkswagen. Jackie (Jo Kennedy) is an ambitious 18 year old singing barmaid who lives with her family in a pub just a stone's throw from the pylons on the south side of Sydney Harbour bridge.Īngus (Ross O'Donovan) is her precocious 14 year old cousin and manager, who intends to make Jackie a star by hook or by crook.
